聯合國2008年的主題 - 社會議題

聯合國定義2008年為國際馬鈴薯年(International Year of the Potato)
國際行星地球年(International Year of Planet Earth)
國際環境衛生年(International Year of Sanitation)
國際語文年(International Year of Languages)
聯合國有制定國際年的規定，每年主題必須為多數國家的關心議題，且需在國際間採取作為，可獲得可鑑別的與具體的結果。
國際馬鈴薯年是祕魯於2005年聯合國食物與農業組織會議所提議，聯合國決議案敘述，馬鈴薯可(1)解決世界貧窮問題(2)能在有限的耕地，迅速生產農作物(3)適應嚴峻氣候。
另如
澳大利亞則宣佈2008年為男童軍年。
英格蘭Cheshire郡稱2008年為庭園年(the year of gardens)。
歐盟把2008年訂為歐洲的跨文化對話年(European Year of Intercultural Dialogue)。
中國的2008年為奧運年。
台灣的2008年則為選舉年。
