氣候學家傑克霍爾（丹尼斯奎德飾演）觀察史前氣候研究指出，溫室效應帶來的全球暖化將會引發地球空前災難。傑克博士曾警告政府官員採取預防行動，但警告顯然已經太晚。霍爾博士急告副總統宣布北緯30度以南全美民眾盡速向赤道方向撤離，該線以北民眾要盡量保暖。就在此時，霍爾博士得知兒子山姆（傑克葛倫霍飾）隻身前往紐約去營救女友，於是決定冒險前進紐約在冰天雪地中展開救援行動。
